05/27/2004: "Black Eyed Peas make rousing Malaysian debut"

KUALA LUMPUR: It was more than 90 minutes of rap, break-dance and rollicking fun when American hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas made a rousing debut in Malaysia at their concert here last night.

True-blue fans of the multi-racial group came in droves and filled half of the 8,000 capacity indoor stadium of the Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club to move with the rhythm and beat of the night.

“Today is a special day because this is the day that hip-hop is in Malaysia,” said Taboo, a member of the funky foursome from Los Angeles.

Taboo and fellow Peas – Fergie, Will I Am and Apl d Apl – rocked the stadium with a repertoire of tunes drawn mostly from their platinum album, Elephunk.

They brewed a bubbling cauldron of hip-hop, rhythm and blues, soul and funk for their Malaysian fans, which included their worldwide hit, Where Is The Love?

The fans also lapped up tunes like Hands Up, Hey Mama and Fly Away.

Local hip-hop duo Too Phat provided the opening act before the Peas sprouted their energy on stage in a concert that was hyped as the first major hip-hop performance to be staged in Malaysia.

And with their show, the Peas lived up to their image as one of the hottest outfits to hit the entertainment scene in recent years.

Their gig here is part of their South-East Asian tour and came at the heels of two other international acts – Incubus, which also played at Bukit Kiara and Linkin’ Park, which rocked thousands of fans at Bukit Jalil early this year.
