Listening Post: Black Eyed Peas

It's important to remember that the Black Eyed Peas, a self-described "old school" rap group, started out as a break-dancing collective at a time and in a place where break-dancing was considered corny. In Los Angeles in 1992, if you weren't a "gangsta" you were sort of ignored, which is why Eazy-E, one of the founders of the seminal gangsta group, NWA, confounded his associates by signing Atban Klann, the break dancing rap group that would eventually morph into the Peas. In any case, the record company folded without ever releasing an album by the Klann.

It took a little longer for the scene to catch up with the Peas' positive outlook and frat-boy party style, though some people would say that it was simply a cycle making its inevitable way back to the source. In the Peas' case, the source is even farther back than early hip-hop heroes like Soulsonic. They've always toured with a band in order to give proper weight to their funk, which is deep, full and stuffed to the brim with diverse sounds ranging from heavy metal guitar to Latin percussion. Their hit-making third album, "Elephunk," tends to be compared with Outkast, another erstwhile hip-hop group who no longer has any use for genre labels. Actually, Will I Am, Apl.De.Ap, and Taboo -- the Peas' three rappers -- are less notable for their rhyming skills than for their unquenchable exuberance. Their concerts are parties, nothing more and nothing less. That's an old-school trait that never goes out of style.

Black Eyed Peas: Feb. 11, 6 p.m., Yebisu Garden Hall, Tokyo. 6,500 yen in advance. Creativeman, (03) 5466-0777.

A 'RETARDED' COLLABORATION!

THE DARKNESS have been collaborating with the BLACK EYED PEAS Down Under at Australia's BIG DAY OUT festival.

Spandex-clad singer Justin Hawkins has been jumping onstage with the 'Where Is The Love?' hip-hop collective during their festival appearances to add his vocal gymnastics to the track 'Retarded'.

Black Eyed Peas Will I Am said: "At first there was a bit of weirdness between us and them in London. Our songs were at radio at the same time and we kept them out of the Number One spot for about seven weeks. They are from the UK. It felt kind of weird. We didn't gel at first."

He added: "The more we saw them at awards ceremonies and big awards we kind of joked around with them and became acquaintances. So on this tour its like 'Hey, what's up Justin?' and he said we should do a song together. I thought 'A song with The Darkness? That would be pretty cool.' He comes up to me and said he wanted to jump on stage with us so I told him to come on during 'Retarded' because that is the perfect song."

However, the collaboration may not stop when the Big Day Out festival - which hits Adelaide tomorrow (January 30) - wraps up in Perth on Sunday (February 1). According to rapper Taboo, the Black Eyed Peas may add The Darkness' frontman to their wish-list for their fourth album 'Monkey Business' - due out in November 2004.

Telling Undercover News about who the band would like to work with on the record, he said: "Beyonce, she is really nice. The Darkness, those dudes are really cool. Hopefully, Coldplay. We met them on Big Day Out 2001 and have become cool friends. We've been hanging out with Will Champion (drummer) on the first half of the Big Day Out tour. I have a clothing line called I Am Clothing and Will Champion wore some of my pieces at the MTV Music Awards in America. That might come to fruition."

News: The Darkness plus next new album!

As unlikely as it may seem, a collaboration between the Darkness and Black Eyed Peas isn't beyond the realm of possibility. While both groups have been touring Australia and New Zealand on the Big Day Out Tour, which wraps up February 1, Darkness singer Justin Hawkins has been joining the hip-hop collective onstage for their song "Let's Get Retarded." BEP's Taboo, meanwhile, cited the heavy-handed British metalheads in an interview with Aussie outlet Undercover News as an act he'd like to work with for the Peas' fourth album, Monkey Business, due in November.

NERD, Black Eyed Peas To Rock The Vote Before Joint Tour

On February 7, the day before the Grammys, the Neptunes' band N.E.R.D. and the Black Eyed Peas will perform at the 11th annual Rock the Vote Awards in Hollywood. Five weeks later, the two artists will hit the road for a tour that begins March 15 in Atlanta and runs through April 18.

N.E.R.D. and Black Eyed Peas stir things up during spring tour

N.E.R.D.--side project of production duo Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, a.k.a. the Neptunes--delivers its sophomore album in March, and sets out that same month on a supporting tour that also features Black Eyed Peas.

Titled "Fly or Die," the forthcoming set is the follow-up to N.E.R.D.'s March 2002 debut, "In Search Of." The new album features the debut single "She Wants to Move," which is streaming at the band's website.

Black Eyed Peas are backing last year's "Elephunk." The album topped the British album chart, which band-member Taboo recently told liveDaily came as a surprise.

LiveDaily Interview: Taboo of Black Eyed Peas

The Black Eyed Peas' Taboo learned early on that the show must go on. Unfortunately, the show had to go on without him after he injured his knee while dancing with Justin Timberlake at a late-2003 performance.

"We were doing 'Where is the Love?' with Justin and my knee went one way, I went the other way and that's the end of the story," said Taboo, who was forced to miss a series of December radio-station-sponsored holiday events with the Black Eyed Peas.

"Throughout becoming a performer, you learn how to manipulate any situation, whether you're hurt or not. That's your job and that's how you present yourself. For me, it's like, as soon as I felt the pain, I had to walk off stage and, luckily, it was toward the end of the song so nobody really noticed."

His new bandmate, Fergie, noticed and served as his savior during his rehabilitation.

"When I got hurt, she really, really looked after me. She helped me out."

No Customs problems as Black Eyed Peas arrive in NZ

Waiting nervously while Auckland Airport Customs officers checked his passport late last night, Black Eyed Peas vocalist Allen "apl.de.ap" Pineda feared the worst. After getting caught with cannabis at Auckland Airport three years ago, the memory of getting strip searched and sent back to the United States was fresh in his mind. But he admitted he knew better this time.

"It was cool, they [Customs] just checked my passport. I thought they were going to get me naked like last time but they didn't and they didn't check my bags either," Pineda said.

How to get hooked up with the Black Eyed Peas

10.01.2004 REBECCA BARRY talks to one of the big acts in attendance at the upcoming Big Day Out, the Black Eyed Peas. Forging relationships on the dancefloor is not just the stuff of alcohol-induced lust. For the Black Eyed Peas, it's a networking process.

It was the hip-pop group's other life as "nightclub cats" that brought them to female vocalist Tracy Ferguson (Fergie), a former stage performer and dancefloor regular whose soaring larynx is most famously showcased in the irritatingly catchy track, Shut Up. Taboo, the group's main MC, says they became friends long before he knew she could hit the high notes.

News: The Darkness Vs Black Eyed Peas

It may be the most unlikely of collaborations but it appears the The Darkness are angling to record tracks with US chart-topping hip hop outfit Black Eyed Peas and dead-eyed Brit Outkast wannbees Big Brovaz. No, really.

Speaking on the eve of the announcement of the 2004 Brit Awards nominations (which are rumoured to include The Darkness in the new ‘Best British Rock Act' category) frontman Justin Hawkins has revealed his desire to record a 'Walk This Way' style track with his new showbiz friends Big Brovaz.

"They’re awesome,” he explained to the Daily Mirror, “We’ve so bonded with those guys. We might do a sort of Aerosmith/Run DMC type collaboration with them – well them and Black Eyed Peas is the one we’re looking at."
